NAME: Tazowie CITY: Clermont Fl EMAIL: tazowie@excite.com SUBJECT: USAT Training Center Date: October 14, 2002 Time: 08:52 PM CommentsCheck the October 11th post by DH. It has a link to a map for the training center. From Maingate on Hwy 192, go west to Hwy 27, go north to Hwy 50, go east about 1.5 miles to Citrus Tower Blvd (traffic light), go north .25 miles and turn right at entrance sign to South Lake Hospital & USAT Training Center. Or enter 1099 Citrus Tower Blvd, Clermont Fl 34711 into a map search of your choice. TAZ NAME: Chuck CommentsMaybe it's just me, ( I am coming from outta town) but I've looked all over the great floridian website and I can't find a map to the USAT Nat'l Training Center. It would be nice to know how to get there, since several things are taking place at this locations. I'm staying at the HoJo Maingate Resort, so if anyone can send general directions, that would be great. That "Clermont Area" map was not too helpful. Thanks. Good luck to all! NAME: IronPenguin CommentsOK, Last detail is in place. Toe Nail painting will be at Elisha's place (see post a couple down for directions) from 4 -6 pm on Friday. Come by, hang out, get your blister prevention... BTW, my wife will be coming down Friday night - the first IM she's watched me. She'll be volunteering for Chuck and hanging around until we all finish. I'm making her a "Mrs. IronPenguin" t-shirt to wear, so she'll be identifiable. If you see her, please say hi. Next week, it's her turn at the Marine Corp Marathon. Mike Tennent
NAME: Mousetown Robert CommentsJust let us know if it is under 212 degrees! I know when the race is over I'll look like a lobster, but I'd rather not be boiled like one in Lake Mineola! :), I'd say no chance for a wetsuit right now even though milder temps are in the offing. Too little too late? -Robert NAME: Chuck Peltz CommentsRobin, Most of the maps I have used on the internet are loaded with errors, some on purpose, others because no one has checked with the Lake County Public Works department to get corrections. Most still show CR 561 going through the Waterfront Park. Most notably is CR 561 on the north and west sides of Lake Minneola is now named Lake Minneola Shores. And by the way, any of you folks driving south on I-75 and then taking the Florida Turnpike to US Hwy 27, you will notice a large sign that says "US Hwy 27 & SR 61 exit (xx) miles". There is no SR 61, it is supposed to be SR 19. But wait Robin (is anybody else still reading this post?), you may have ridden most of the bike course correctly. Rumor has it that the Lake County Sheriff's Department has requested some directional changes in the first half of the bike course, for safety reasons. You may want to re-check the bike course maps Tuesday. If the changes are made, the correct maps will be in your 'race packet' when you pick it up. Oh, someone asked about the swim Thursday morning, as posted numerous times the last couple of weeks, YES!! I'll be there at 7:30am, IP has it listed at 8:00am. At 10:30am, it is done. Don't forget to bring your rock or stone for the "MORE STONES" rock garden, on the Circle at the Park. Peltzmeister

Tim GFT 2001 NAME: Bob CommentsA race in Memphis that is a "no miss" is Memphis in May- May 18th, 2003 I believe. GREAT race director, GREAT venue, strong competition, AWESOME post race food. Highly recommend that race. (Gosh...I better register early this year. <g>) See you in 48 hrs or so! Safe travels all. NAME: Robert Mangum CommentsElisha, Saw you are from Memphis. I grew up in Tunica and was wondering if there are any good tri's in that area durning the year. I could kill two birds with one stone by going home to visit with a race on the side. Or is it going to a race with a visit on the side. Guess that would depend on who you are talking with. Thanks for any information, hope to meet you at the pre-race gatherings this week. Bobby NAME: Elisha CommentsOnce again in case anyone missed it, here's directions and a link to a map of where the Toenail Painting Party will be. As you are leaving the Clermont area towards Winter Gardens (going east) on SR50, you will travel a couple of miles when you will see a traffic signal (about 5-7 minutes or so). Deer Island is immediately on your right after the traffic signal (there is a Citgo station ahead on the left). It is a gated entrance, but when I've been there in the past it was always open (if not I'll figure something out). When the entrance road comes to a dead end, turn right and go around the curve. The road will then straighten up a bit, and the house will be on the right--17695 Deer Isle Circle. I don't remember how many houses you pass--somewhere around 8-9 or so--but it is the only house that has a solid brick mailbox, in addition to the bricked driveway (circle drive in front). The star on the map is very close to the actual location of the house. (Thanks Chuck, for the help with directions!) I will also try to have maps to pass out on Thursday and Friday. Unfortunately, I don't think I will arrive in time to attend the Welcome Reception, but I will be there for the swim on Thursday morning. NAME: Chipper CommentsBobby, Your bike won't leave the rack until you go get it. They have bike catchers and rerackers for the end of the bike, but you leave the T1 change tent, enter the bike racks and find your own bike. You then walk/run it down the center isle to the bike out. The bikes are on grass, not pavement. There was only a small bit of gravel before the mount line last year. The first 200 yards of road is uphill from the mount line. In shorter Tri's, I've always gone with the clipped in method, riding outside the shoe for a while. But there really isn't much advantage to that in this race. The sand and grass won't scuff up your cleats when you take the bike out of the racks if you're already wearing your shoes. The first hill will be a whole lot easier if you are in your shoe as apposed to on top of it. AND, you are going to be in those shoes for 112 miles, so getting a nice clean lubricated foot into the shoe in the changing tent is worth the 30 seconds it takes per foot. Heck, I even wore socks last year! Remember, although time saving methods we've learned in shorter races over the years will help in this race, having comfortable feet will matter more than you can imagine -- especially around sunset. NAME: Aylin ARditi CommentsProbably GFT folks will answer you but .. Fred's map is correct to the dot ( do not know what Mapquest is doing ) and yes we do go up Sugarloaf. 561A is if you take a left while going up 455 ( sometimes if you do not want to hit Sugarloaf and suffice with Grassy Lakes you can cheat it that way ) I have been riding that areas for quite a while now. I am sooo scared of SR19, I only rode there 2 times and both times were passed by multiple 18 wheelers on the section that does not have any shoulders whatsoever.. Literally felt the wind sucking my bike they were that close . I am hoping for some traffic restrictions that day on the non-shouldered part of SR 19 ( including the bridge ) , otherwise we will be in trouble. Looking forward to a great day ( if only it would cool down so I could use the wetsuit .. ) NAME: MattMiz CommentsIs there one? I'm coming from NJ, getting in Wed. night and was wondering if they're opening up the water at all for us to get that tune-up swim in? I've heard that in years past there was one on Thurs. morning - can anyone confirm? Thanks! Matt NAME: Paul CommentsWait = weight five days before the big dance...pardon the poor spelling... NAME: Paul CommentsHelp! I'm desperately trying to taper, but I don't want to gain 3-5 pounds this week sitting around. Any suggestions short of wiring my jaw shut or thowing out all the silverware? My body is still acting like I'm doing the big workouts...midnight hunger attacks...thinking about food...etc. I must say, the thought of carrying any extra weight up Pitt street or Sugarloaf is a pretty good motivator to put down the fork! One good thing about tapering is that my cars are happy now from the weekend maintenance and the yard loves me too! All those red lights on the dashboard were starting to get to me. NAME: Enduradad CommentsI wish all of you the best.. Remember this is Graduation you have all ready earned the degree! Go slow have fun and cherish every moment! Don't race to the end only to find out LIFE IS IN THE JOURNEY. OH and stay until the last finisher to share others dreams come true. E-Dad GFT 99,00 PM 01 NAME: bambam CommentsYOU MIGHT WANT TO PUT IT ON IN T1 ALSO YOU WILL HAVE ACCESS TO THE BIKE RACE MORNING NAME: Robin CommentsI just went on Mapquest and drilled down into the streets on the bike map. Apparently I have been confused about the street names around CR455/ CR 561 (or CR 561A) for years, primarily due to signage out there. I could swear that when you come out of Ferndale the signs say that if you turn left on 561, you're turning onto 561A... and maybe south of 455 that is what CR 561 is called. But Fred's map shows 561A as being somewhere else. So as I thought, yes, we are going up Sugarloaf. Further, Mapquest shows that after you climb up "Sugarloaf Mtn Rd", it is CR516A - *not* CR561A as shown on the bike course map - that takes you to Grassy Lake Rd. I don't know why these roads are labelled in such a confusing manner, but Fred, this is something to note. Tribe, please note while driving the course.
NAME: Kyle Yost Comments1. Can reflective tape be purchased at the Expo? What kind of tape should I get that will stick to soaked shoes and jersey? b. I was planning on wearing a heartrate monitor, but I've never worn one in a swim without a wetsuit. I tried it yesterday in the pool and could not get the strap to stay on when kicking off the wall. Will others be putting the strap on in T1 or just tightening the strap up real good and swimming with it on? iii. Do we have access to our bikes race morning or is Friday the last we see of them until we hit T1? NAME: Robin CommentsA couple questions re: the bike course *will there be any port-o-johns anywhere along the course? approximately how many/how often? I rode the 1st half of the course this Sat. but ended up doing the "upper loop" backwards by accident. Are all the turns marked on the road yet? I didn't think so b/c I only saw one or two water stops marked. What COLOR will the turns be marked in this year? *On the way out do we go UP Citrus Tower Blvd hill like usual? I thought so, but not sure from map. * I'm used to taking Fred's left turn at corner of CR 455/CR 561A, going UP Sugarloaf hill, but I think per the map we're actually supposed to come at it the other way, going DOWN Sugarloaf?? Is this correct? * Very windy and dangerous traffic on the bridge that crosses Little Lake Harris (but nice scenery!) Wouldn't recommend that anyone have those disk wheel things. I could hardly steer straight as it was. * Hwy 19 and CR448 also windy. Hwy 19 rather bumpy pavement.
NAME: George CommentsJust wanted to say " Have A Great Race Everyone" next Saturday. Christine and I will be in Kona so we will not be at the race or expo. Our business partner, John Woodruff, will be manning the booth at the expo so stop and say hello. George
NAME: Rich G. CommentsTo all the vets: Congratulations on your support and encouragement for all the virgins who about to complete an incredible journey. You people are what makes this race so special. To all the virgins: Enjoy the journey. At points during the journey, doubts may arise - if they do, just draw upon the strength of others and more important offer encouragement to others that might be struggling. The training has been tough but the joy of making the final turn and heading for the finish line is something you will never forget. To everybody: Have a great race and hopefully I will be able to dance with you sometime in the future. Rock on, Suzy Rich G. GFT 99, Pineman 01, 5430 02 NAME: Mangum, Robert CommentsSince our bikes are being brought to us by the support staff, is it wise to leave out shoes attached to the bike. My plan was to clip in my shoes Saturday morning. The more I have thought of this, the more nervous I get about one shoe getting lost in transport. Thoughts. Bobby NAME: Bubba CommentsHello tribe, We are looking foward to seeing everyone Thur. night at the dinner. For the new tribe members, look for the table marked for the Tribe and introduce yourself. Taper well and don't overdo this week. There is not much training that we can do to help the race now, but there is a lot that we can do to hurt it. See yall in a few days.
MORE STONES! Randy+Sue NAME: Tazowie CommentsI believe the reflective tape requirement was put in place for the Great Floridian Triathlon, years ago by CFT Sommer Sports, as a safety mandate. While many desire to finish before dark, there is no assurance that this will be the case. A minor injury, bike problems, or a flat, could throw off the game plan for the day. It starts getting dark about 7:00pm, and anyone still out on the run course will need reflective material to alert the few inattentive drivers that will surely be present. Don't be cheap, put strips on your shoes, on your run number belt, on the front and back of your jersey. Be creative, use different colors. Fabricate your (nick)name or race number. Or even invest a few bucks in a reflective traffic vest. Once again, it's a SAFETY thing. By the way, there should be a full moon that night. TAZ
NAME: Todd Hoover CommentsThe rules state that we must attach reflective material to the front and back of our run clothing. How many square inches? What should I use? Where can I buy it? I have never heard of this rule before if you finish before dark. Thanks in advance! Todd NAME: zen yanni CommentsVets, virgins, tribe folks. Took my bike in for a final tune-up 2 weeks ago. It's taken these 2 weeks to get it workin' right again. It's not as good as it was before the tune-up, but I'm pretty sure it'll do. I start drivin' Monday morning ... assuming my Jeep dries out. Washed my Jeep (first time in 2 years) for my major league sojourn to tri mecca. Musta moved some "good" dirt. We had lotsa rain in Pennsyl-tucky this week and now my foot wells are soaked. Happened exactly 1 day after the warrantee ran out. (KNEW i shouldnta washed that thing!) Packing is taking A LOT of time. I hope ya'll start earlier in than I did. Whew! Lookin' forward to seein' faces to connect with names. Travel safe and don't stop for gas in Manassass. Train Safe and Have Fun zen yanni NAME: Kerry Riggs CommentsTaz, Thanks for pointing out my error regarding wave starts. Hope I didn't confuse anyone. Johanna, I'm in the same boat, as far as car keys. I keep mine in a ziplock baggie with my name on it and put it in my "RUN" bag. I'll change out of bike clothing, into run clothing, and find it still there, and put it in my cycling shoes. One less thing to worry about during the run. They are there when I pick up my bike and bags after the "race". This is my fourth GFT and I haven't had a problem. Glad to hear that Gatorade is on the course this year. Maybe I can skip the special needs this year and keep on truckin'. I'll stick with bananas, Powergels, Thermatabs and an occasional mix of Cytomax. Who is turning the lights out this year?
NAME: IronPenguin CommentsOK folks, Here's the Tribe Event schedule as it stands now. This is the last time I'll post it.

We have a Slide in truck camper. Does anyone know any good ones? thanks-Jaseun NAME: Aylin Arditi CommentsI do not know whether this was mentioned in any other thread but when you drop your bike off at T area deflate your tires a bit since they will be sitting in the sun awhile , last month at the tri america series finale there were too many 'boom' sounds race morning. Also do leave the bike in a very low gear , I believe we might be exiting the T1 heading a steep hill. Have fun !
NAME: Jamie Durkin CommentsFor all hardworking triathletes!!! There is a 2 bedroom apartment, fully furnished, available for GFT event. Location is 1/2 mile from the transition area. Kitchen, parking and a place to stay and relax are all included. Please write for pics and more information.
NAME: Chuck Peltz CommentsJohanna, The info was directed primarily to those that finish before the posted access times. For the late evening finishers, not much of a problem. At 1:00am Sunday morning, the Lake County Sheriffs Department takes over security of the transition area, until 7:30am Sunday morning. NO ONE will be allowed access to the TA for any reason during this time. It will be your responsibility to make proper arrangements concerning this NO ENTRY phase. The possibilty exists that a 'warmup gear' bag might be furnished (with your number attached). The purpose of this bag is to place your removed early morning attire and needed finish line clothes in. It is dropped off at a designated spot outside the TA before the race starts, and is delivered to the finish line for your convenience before you finish. To be on the safe side, I would suggest that you bring along a large, heavy duty, white, drawstring top trashbag. Before putting anything in it, use a marking pen to write your name/race number and the words "WARMUP" in big letters. If a 'warmup gear' bag is furnished, this is a moot point. I hope this helps clarify a minor issue. Chuck NAME: nick Commentsi know this has nothing to do with the gft but i am wanting to start a triathlon class in a local high school where i work and would like to know where to get any info on this matter if anyone can be of assisstance please email me at nivkovich@wcpss.net any info would be appreciated thank you and good luck at the gft where hopefullly i will be a participant next year rock on NAME: Johanna CommentsI don't have any friends, significant others or support group coming to watch me race. Is there any other place we can leave our keys etc...? (other than transition since Chuck suggests we don't do that). I am going to be one of the final finishers...coming in anytime between 12 and 1 a.m. NAME: Chuck Peltz Commentsvon Spiegelfeld; As per raceday guidelines, the transition area will be cleared by 8:00am of the 'Half' participants. TO ALL; Reviewing the proposed transition area setup, I would suggest that on the event morning arrival, the 'Full' participants use the east or 3rd Street entrance into the transition area. The 'Half' participants should use the west or 4th Street entrance. Bodymarking will take place at both locations, and you MUST have your ID wristband on to be bodymarked and enter. The 'ChampionChip' pickup will be at the pavilion, next to the public restrooms, on the way to the swim start. The 'Half' participants will be directed to and use ONLY the west or 4th Street entrance to reclaim their bikes and gear after 2:00pm on raceday. After 6:30pm, the 'Half' and 'Full' participants may use either entrance to reclaim the bikes and gear. No spectators or helpers will be allowed inside the transition area. Wristbands and race numbers are required to reclaim your equipment. If there are any questions or deviations needed, see Dave or Chuck before proceeding into the transition area. PLEASE REMEMBER... DO NOT bring anything into the transition area that you will want or need immediately after finishing, and before the posted entry times. Keep your car/hotel keys, cell phones, billfolds/purses, medications, etc., outside the transition area, preferably with your S/O, friends, or support group. Thanks in advance for your cooperation. Chuck NAME: Brian CommentsHey folks, I don't know if this has been addressed yet, as I am somewhat of an infrequent lurker, but I made a quick topomap of the new bike course. (yes, the one that doesn't cross Rt. 50.) Of course, it's not exact, as I just eyeballed it from the map on this website, but here's a link to the .jpg http://pages.prodigy.net/usphsfnp/gftbike.jpg I don't know if the thru town stuff in the beginning is correct, but the rest should be pretty close. See you all Saturday! bri NAME: OC Tri Geek CommentsAll right, the training is done, the tapering is ongoing... I got out of bed at 5am yesterday and headed for the pool knowing that this was the last time I would HAVE to do this for a long long time (for triathletes, a long time is about a week). Thank you Iron Vets for all the tips and hints for the race and the area. I am getting on the red-eye from So Cal tonight and will be in the area first thing tomorrow. I can't wait. All I have to say is... lets "rock-on"! Andrew NAME: DH CommentsThis link has a map to the Tri-Center for those who've never been there. http://www.clermonttoday.com/tigersharks/contacts.htm NAME: von Spiegelfeld CommentsSince the half ironman doesn't start until 8:45 a.m., will it be possible to get to the site later than the full ironman participants? I'm hoping we'll be able to access our bikes after the full ironman has started. I didn't see this addressed in any of the race updates. NAME: Chuck Peltz CommentsFor those of you keeping up with the additional 'social calendar' activities, here is an update; Pre-event swim in Lake Minneola, will be from 7:30am until 10:30am on Thursday morning ONLY! At any other time, it is "SAYOR"....'swim at your own risk'. Friday morning, the CFT staff will be setting up the swim start for the event, at the Park. Also, the City of CLERMONT may have their work crews at the beach. A Friday swim has not been OK'd by the City. Enter the Waterfront Park from East Avenue and proceed into the parking lot. Parking fees have been waived during this alloted time frame. I will be there to point out the start/return for this warmup. Restrooms and showers are available close by. Footwear is suggested. Bring your own hydration/nutrition. At 10:45am, I will leave to attend to other functions. How's that Yakabo/IP? Chuck NAME: Bob CommentsFred- Thank you for the detailed update regarding John. I also didn't know John but I certainly understand what his family is going thru. I'll keep them in my thoughts. Train safely folks. NAME: Paul CommentsWeather.com is predicting 70's for highs all next week and a low of 58 on Wednesday for the Jax area. Hope the cold weather reaches Clermont...c'mon wetsuit! NAME: Tazowie CommentsFor the newbies and vets coming into town next week, there is plenty of parking available, but most is 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the transition area and swim start. If you are with others who are not participating in the event, I would recommend that they drop you off near the venue, and then park downtown and walk back. DO NOT even think of looking for parking around the transition area, there isn't any!! There is NOT any handicap parking available at the Waterfront Park during this event. Several streets will be blocked off early on race day, and no traffic will be allowed on them for safety reasons. Please pay attention to the traffic control officers and volunteers. They will directing about 3,500 people and half as many vehicles in a very short time frame. Cooperation is essential. Early arrival is best, as I believe the checkin and bodymarking has been moved up to 5:00am (unofficially). UNOFFICIAL WATER TEMPERATURE ...... an amazing 84 degrees this morning, but don't count out those wetsuits quite yet. I have seen the water temperature dropped quickly in just 2 days. TAZ NAME: Keith Haroutunian CommentsI think I speak for all racers, vets and newbies alike, when I say that we are all deeply saddened by the loss of one of our fellow competitors yesterday (see Fred's post below). Although I did not know John, I will still be racing in his honor on Saturday. Rock On John, Keith NAME: BAMBAM CommentsTRAIL SURFACE CONCRETE VERY NICS TO RUN ON SOME SHADE DARRYL NAME: tim Commentslike to add one other thing, if we swim with wetsuits, there is no real need for the big power kick, so at the beginning back of the kick a tad and let everyone find a space. good luck to all! NAME: Fred Sommer CommentsIt is with great sadness that I report that a cyclist in town for next weekend’s Great Floridian Triathlon, was killed while cycling Thursday, October 10. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and witnesses at the scene, 72 year old John Shea from Yonkers, New York, had tried to cross U.S. 27 from North Grassy Lake Road when he unexpectedly made a U-turn in the middle of the northbound side of U.S. 27, a four-lane highway. That's when the truck and the bicycle collided at about 11:30 a.m. The accident did not occur on the actual Great Floridian Course. This was to be John’s first attempt at the Great Floridian Triathlon. Now in its 12th year, the Great Floridian Triathlon takes place in Clermont, Florida, on Saturday, October 19, 2002. The Great Floridian serves as the USA Triathlon National Championship for the iron-distance. Over 1,200 athletes from 43 states and 13 countries will be competing, with 750 athletes competing at the full distance of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and a full marathon run (26.2 miles). The remaining athletes will compete at the same time in the Half Great Floridian Triathlon, featuring half the distances of the Full. The race organizers, CFT Sommer Sports, plan to retire race number 599, John’s pre-assigned race number, from use at all future Great Floridian Triathlons. A moment of silence in memory of John will also take place prior to the 7:30am Start. The race committee, and the entire community, is saddened by this tragic accident. Our condolences go out to John's family and friends. Fred Sommer NAME: Alejandra Jimenez (Costa Rica) CommentsHello everyone, We need suggestions on where to take our bikes on Friday afternoon to have them set, adjust for the race. We will have them mailed by UPS, we arrive on Friday by midday and obviously will only have a couple hours pick up our numbers and to prepare before the race. Can we that on the Expo? Thanks for your comments and suggestions. P.S. My husband and I are newbies and I still get butterflies in my stomach everytime I visit this forum. NAME: Bob CommentsWhat is the Minneola Trail made from? Crushed gravel, asphalt, mud with hungry gators on the sides?
NAME: Bob CommentsGreat comments by Paul. I also encourage folks to "self seed". Tell the people around you before the start what you are planning on swimming. Did this in Kona and NEVER GOT HIT (more than once or twice). A lady in front of me moved back. A guy way behind us moved up. Much of the physical contact is avoidable. Here's some of my suggestions: 1-Even before the race starts do us all a favor and trim your finger and toe nails. Especially this year since it appears wetsuits are out. 2-You should have an idea of how long the swim will take you. The difference between a good swim and a so so swim will not make a big difference in the course of the whole day. Halfway into the bike you won't even remember how long the swim took you. 3-While swimming, if some one is in bumping you move a little- it may be inadvertant. 4-Grabbing onto another athlete during the swim is very uncool - and dangerous. A friend accidentially grabbed someone in IM-WIS and that person lifted their foot into his nose. My buddy raced the next 10+ hours with a broken nose- ever try and run with a broken nose...it really hurts. AND...you never know who among us played "big time" water polo. (me) It's ok to touch feet or ankles...grab and/or pull on anything....better not hang on too long. NAME: Mangum CommentsThis site is great for advice thanks to all for your views. Tapering is much worse than training. I am finally sleeping in and what do I do, but lie awake thinking about all the training I am missing. How many times did I wake up wanting only to go back to sleep instead of dodging cars at 0530. Ok enough whinning just need to vent to people who actually know what I am talking about. Tapering question, my running plan for the final 3 weeks was a total of 16 miles 3 weeks out, 12 miles 2 weeks out, and a slow 3 to 5 mile run on the Tuesday before the race. As all plans go this is not the case. I got a bad blister at the Disney Tri. Tuseday 3 weeks out I ran 8 miles with duct tape over the blister and it only got worse. That Friday I tried again and got 3 miles before I called it. This week no running at all. My question is how bad is this for the race. The blister will be healed enough to run the 3 to 5 miler on Tuesday, but nothing before then. Bobby NAME: Enduradad CommentsHey Newbies It's almost time and now I want to share one last list of important things to remember. Sure your ready with salt tabs, spare tires and bags of transition stuff... but are you ready for the MOST important parts of the race? I'm talking about the race photos and breaking the finish line tape? Fact #1 strip off the goggles and swim cap as soon as you stand up coming out of the last lap. Other wise no one will ever know it's you. Fact #2 the first photo on the bike comes a little after Sugar loaf. It's down hill with a curve. Tuck in and look fast in the aero position (smile!) Fact #3 The next bike photo is on the up hill by the lake. Try and smile get up and pound it! Don't get caught cussing at Fred for putting a climb right after a turn-off. There are signs warning you Photos ahead SMILE! Now for the big finish... You need to plan how your going to break the tape. Trust me on the way into the chute isn't the time to be indecisive! Here is the Ironman finish line rules to remember: After crossing the line and they start to put the medal around your neck.. DO NOT bend over to help! The weight of the medal will put you flat on your face. Remember you just went 140.6 miles. Next get water! Not to drink, but to wash off with. Your going to want a big hug from your loved ones. You won't have loved ones if you hug they as smelly as your going to be! Last but not least... Stay for the dance and dance! I would never have believed it but the stretching was so good for me. You'll feel better Sunday and you'll get to see the insiring finish of the BOPers. GTG Thought for the day: All men die, not all men truely live! "Brave Heart" NAME: JD CommentsWeather.com is predicting Wed and Thurs with highs in the upper 70's, but then we're back to the mid 80's by Sat! NAME: Rob CommentsStuart, Do not do a marathon. This would probably kill your chances for a great race in Florida. If you are slow to recover <which I am> you will probably have a crappy day. My longest run is coming next week. There are many differing philosophies regarding your long runs. I am following a philosophy of running by time rather than distance. My longest run will be about 2:30 which at an 8 minute per mile pace is a little over 20 miles. My long runs occur the day after my long ride/brick workouts, so my legs are still somewhat fatigued. I also do a somewhat longer run during the week when my legs are fresh, but this run is a little shorter than the weekend long run by about 15 minutes or so<these are all aerobic based>. I will then do one more run during the week that I build into where part is aerobic, and the other is at AT pace gradually increasing the time I spend at AT pace. The latter runs will extend to about 1:20 or for me about 11-12 miles of running. Good luck, -Rob
NAME: Paul CommentsThere are those amongst us that think the swim is a combat sport. Although with over 700 excited athletes all entering a small space at pretty much the same time, incidental contact is almost unavoidable, we are all familiar from past experiences of those who exercise what I believe to be unsportmanlike conduct during the swim. Much of the physical contact is avoidable. Here's some of my suggestions: 1-Even before the race starts do us all a favor and trim your finger and toe nails. Especially this year since it appears wetsuits are out. 2-You should have an idea of how long the swim will take you. Look at last years results and then place yourself in the mob on the beach according to how long you expect to take during the swim. If you think the swim will take you 1 hr and 45 mins then move towards the back, believe me it may sound like a good idea to be one of the first to hit the water but after 300 people swim over the top of you you'll wish you were towards the back. I'm not the strongest swimmer, I expect to finish in about 1 hr and 10mins so I go atleast in the middle or back, I start out easy and let the crowd thin out some, and usually swim the second lap faster then the first. The difference between a good swim and a so so swim will not make a big difference in the course of the whole day. Halfway into the bike you won't even remember how long the swim took you. 3-While swimming, if some one is in your personal space try to move to their opposite side. Likewise if you know you are in someone's space try to move away from them. 4-Grabbing onto another athlete during the swim is very uncool. This is just my two cents on the swim. I can not say that I have never slapped or kicked another athlete during the swim, however whenever I have I have apologized, not that they could hear me, and I made a concerted effort to move away from them. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable swim. NAME: Candi CommentsI was just wondering if anyone has any idea as to the size of the water bottles that they will be giving out on the bike at the water bottle exchanges. I am guessing the larger ones? Thanks! candi NAME: Warren Commentsstuart: 4 weeks out is typically the last "monster" workout - whether it's a long bike/run combo or 3 hour + run. the concern with the marathon is remembering that it's a training run once the gun goes off. for this, you might consider starting much farther back than you normally would - to put any thoughts of a pr out of range early on. otherwise, it may be too ez to hammer and really mess yourself up for florida. warren |
